About The Department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering came into existence since inception of this college. The Department started offering three year diploma course in Mechanical Engineering in the year 2012 with an intake of 60 students as per approval received from AICTE New Delhi. During study theoretical and practical knowledge is imparted to the students through effective teaching learning schedules as per curriculum of PSBTE &IT Chandigarh. Students are exposed to real industry situations through industrial visits and training programs. Regular technical activities are organized in the college to boost morale of students.

Department has highly qualified, experienced, and dedicated faculty. Teaching pedagogy focuses on application-based teaching with demos, models, and videos etc. Our flourishing department is fully equipped with all laboratories and workshops. The Department has signed MOU’s with the well established industries for in-plant industrial trainings and placement of students. The Department has an excellent placement record, the most of our passed out students are well placed in prestigious organizations and others opted for higher education or self employment.

Our highly qualified and experienced faculty members are always dedicated to impart latest knowledge to the students through seminars, workshops and expert lectures. Department also organise various programs of personality development, character building, improving communication skill, presentation skills for inculcating Leadership qualities among the students.

Lab Details:

A) Thermodynamics Lab
Thermodynamics lab is fully equipped with various equipments and models of steam generators, turbines, compressors, power plant equipment, testing of IC Engines, fuel supply, ignition system, cooling and lubrication systems of IC engines and gas turbines etc.

B) Automobile Lab
Automobile Engineering is an important subject as per curriculum. Mechanical Engineering diploma holders are required to supervise production and repair and maintenance of vehicles. This Lab is established to impart required knowledge and skills to students related to automobiles with the help of various IC Engines and Models.

C) Metrology & Instrumentation Lab
Metrology is the science of measurement, diploma holders in this course are responsible for ensuring process and quality control by making measurements and carrying out inspection of various parameters. For this purpose, knowledge and skills about various measuring instruments are required. The aim of this Lab is to develop knowledge and skills amongst the students in order to use various measuring tools and instruments.

D) Strength of Materials Lab
Diploma holders in this course are required to analyze reasons for failure of different components and select the required material for different applications. For this purpose, it is essential to teach them concepts, principles, applications and practices covering stress, strain, bending moment, shearing force, shafts, columns and springs. Purpose of this lab is to provide application based practical training in the above concepts.

E) Applied Mechanics Lab
This Lab is fully equipped with various apparatus to provide practical training related to concepts of mechanics like laws of forces, moments, friction, centre of gravity, laws of motion and simple machines which are required by the students for further understanding of other allied subjects. The subject enhances the analytical ability of the students.

F) CNC Lab
Diploma holders are required to supervise and handle specialized machines and equipment like CNC machines. For this purpose, knowledge and skills about NC machines, part programming in NC machines and tooling for CNC machines are required to be imparted for enabling them to perform above functions. CNC Lab provides knowledge and skills about CNC machines, tools, equipment and use of high tech machines to increase production of high quality.

G) Hydraulics and Pneumatics Lab
Diploma holders in this course are required to deal with problems of fluid flow and use of hydraulics and pneumatics equipments for power generation. For this purpose, knowledge and skills about fluid mechanics and machinery, hydraulics and pneumatics systems are required to be imparted for enabling them to perform above functions.

H) Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Lab
The diploma holders in Mechanical Engineering are responsible for supervising and maintenance of RAC system. For this purpose, the knowledge and skill covering basic principles of refrigeration and air conditioning is required to be imparted to the students. Moreover, RAC industry is expanding and employment opportunities in this field are increasing exponentially. This laboratory has required tools and equipments to provide hand on training to the students as per curriculum.

I) Engineering Materials Lab
Lot of development has taken place in the field of materials. New materials are being developed and it has become possible to change the properties of materials to suit the requirements. Diploma holders in this course are required to make use of different materials for various applications. For this purpose, it is necessary to teach them basics of metal structure, properties, usage and testing of various ferrous and non ferrous materials and various heat treatment processes. This Lab aims at developing knowledge about the characteristics, testing and usage of various types of materials used in the field of engineering.

J) Computer Aided Drafting and Modelling Lab
Our college has well equipped CAD Lab and practical training is provided to the students to prepare various drawings of components by using CAD software .On completion of this course, students will be able to use CAD software to draw 3D Models of engineering components.


Career Prospectus in Mechanical Engineering


Mechanical Engineering is an evergreen and ever flourishing branch of Engineering because the demand of mechanical engineer is in every industry in India as well as in abroad. A pass out diploma holder in Mechanical Engineering can work in Government and Private Sectors. He can work in manufacturing industries, Marketing and Servicing Sectors. A Mechanical Engineer has wide scope of employment, few of them explained as under.


 

CNC Machine Operator

CNC machine operators, or CNC machinists, manage computer numeric controlled (CNC) equipment from setup to operation, producing parts and tools from different resources including metal and plastic. They're tasked with monitoring machinery, inspecting finished products and leading test runs ensuring desired outputs. Industries dealing in products made of Plastics and foams, Vinyl, Wood & Ply boards, Paper & cards, Metals, Glass, Fabric and leather require these job profiles.

 

Boiler Operator

Boiler operators in industries like Cheema Boilers, Roopnagar, Punjab perform a range of tasks involved in day-to-day operation and maintenance of boilers. They ensure appropriate fuel delivery to keep the boiler working. Operators devote significant time to monitoring meters and gauges to maintain fuel, chemical and water levels, adjusting the levels as necessary.

 

Diploma Trainee Engineer

Diploma Engineer generally perform the work at production lines where different parts are assembled  at various automobile industries such as Swaraj Tractors, Bajaj Autos, Hero Motors, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Ashok Leyland etc.

 

Diploma Production Engineer/Managers/ Supervisors

After gaining the experience of working at production lines the Diploma Trainee Engineer are promoted and assigned more responsible jobs where they start supervising the overall work being done at production lines to ensure smooth and timely completion of the task of assembling different parts and deliver a ready to use product before some quality assurance testing, of course.

 

Quality Control Inspector/ Engineer

Duties of a Quality Control/Assurance Diploma Engineers include monitoring operations to ensure that they meet production standards and further recommending adjustments to the assembly or production process. Inspecting, testing, or measuring materials or products being produced. Measuring products with rulers, callipers, gauges, micrometers etc and also perform other tests as prescribed by the production standards that the specific industry is following.

 

Mechanical Maintenance

Performs preventive maintenance inspections and service on machines. Thoroughly cleans machines and machine parts, removing parts and reinstalling as necessary. Oils and lubricates moving parts on machines to ensure effective performance, regularly record keeping of the inspection work done and timely reporting damaged, worn, or broken parts so that the production targets are not compromised and the plant keeps working at its desired level of efficiency. These job profiles are common in companies like Pharmaceutical companies like Sun-Pharma, FMCG Companies like Nestle, ITC etc. 

 

Lab Assistants

Lab assistants are responsible for helping Lecturers, Teachers and Scientists during lab tests and research. These highly-analytical professionals' possess in-depth knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and equipment. Their duties include processing samples, classifying results, and recording findings. These profile are common in DRDO, ISRO, private and government educational Institutions.

Instructors

Generally, college instructors (Government as well as Private ITIs): Teach and supervise students using lectures, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory workshop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects. Develop curriculum and prepare teaching materials and course outlines.

Junior Engineer

Students with a dream of getting into a Government Jobs can opt for this profile. A Junior Engineer provides general, entry-level support to the engineering department. Verifies and tests assigned metrics on projects. Enters test results into quality control database. Identifies potential areas of product improvement; recommends and assists with development of appropriate solutions. These profiles are found in various state level departments like Irrigation, Local Bodies etc which are filled through separate entrance exams which requires minimum desired qualification as Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized/ government approved institution.
